Galaxies & Constellations Unit Study
Look at Galaxies & Constellations as you never have before with this Nature Study Unit!
We’re spending a month exploring different types of galaxies, light years, and star mapping using constellations. Did you know there are more than two ways to find the North Star, Polaris? You will be learning about that and so much more this month!
As always, in this month’s unit, you get a booklist based on the books our writers used for their research.
This unit is focused on all things time, space, and exploration - take a look at how we decided to explore this fascinating topic:
Day 1 - Elements of the Night Sky - What are Galaxies and Constellations?
Day 2 - Types of Galaxies: Spiral, elliptical, irregular, and their characteristics
Day 3- The Milky Way - Our galaxy and its structure - play a star life cycle game to see how galaxies are forever growing and forming as stars progress through their unique life cycles.
Day 4 - Galileo Galilei - for the first time ever we’re introducing explorers into Nature Study Club, because when it comes to outer space, their discoveries add amazing depth to our understanding of the universe!
Day 5 - Group STEM: How far away is space STEM exploration
Day 6 - Famous Constellations used to navigate the night sky
Day 7 - Star Charts and Navigation: How to use star charts to find constellations and navigate Earth’s surface by starlight. The Senior and Expert workbooks even include star charts you can assemble for this endeavor!
Day 8 - Light Years and Astronomical Distances - we never knew so much of space was about mapping and measuring, but we have since realized this is the backbone of space exploration!
Day 9 - Jocelyn Bell Burnell: Her discovery of pulsars and how we use them to measure distances in outer space!
Day 10 - Group ART: Chalk Pastel Galaxies
Day 11 - Edwin Hubble & expanding galaxy STEM activity!
Day 12 - Telescopes over time - make a telescope timeline!
Day 13 - Amateur Astronomy - Tips and Tricks to make you a nighttime navigator!
Day 14 - Gameschooling Day - try our new original game, Galaxy Rota!
Day 15 - Poetry Teatime
Day 16-20 includes four unique final projects for all of our explorers!
